Learn to Eat Healthy During Pregnancy

When you are pregnant you will have many cravings. Some of the cravings that you will have are for food that is not good for you, such as donuts or other sweets. It is important to learn to eat healthy during pregnancy so you can help your baby get all the nutrients that he needs. It is okay, however, to splurge every now and then and have something sweet  or something else unhealthy that you are craving.

You should start out by making sure that you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. This is good for both you and your baby. You will need an additional 200 to 300 calories each day to provide adequately for your baby. Make sure you give your baby these extra calories by eating food that is healthy. Eating whole grain carbohydrates are a very good source of fiber and very good for you and your baby.

Make sure you take the prenatal vitamins that your doctor prescribed for you each and every day. These vitamins should have at least 400 mcg of folic acid. According to the March of Dines, 70 percent of neural tube defects can be easily avoided by making sure you get enough folic acid in your diet. Some foods that are very rich in folic acid are green leafy vegetables, orange juice, strawberries, and fortified cereals.

Drink or eat four servings of dairy products each day. You can also eat foods that are rich in calcium to get some of your dairy.

You should also eat at least three servings of iron-rich foods. You need to have at least 18 milligrams of iron each day in your diet. Great sources of iron rich foods include grain products, poultry, lean meat, eggs, fish, and green leafy vegetables.

Eat at least once source of Vitamin A every other day. Foods that are rich in Vitamin A will often be orange or yellow in color. These include sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe and apricots.

Learning to eat healthy during pregnancy is very important. You should learn the proper nutrition during pregnancy to ensure that your baby is completely healthy when he is born. This will also ensure that you also stay healthy, so you can take care of your precious baby after he is born. Eating right is not hard to do, and is something everyone should do anyway. Learning to eat right and continuing to eat healthy will also help your child be a healthy eater.
