Avoid These Foods When Pregnant
Diet during pregnancy must be well planned and monitored as she will not only be eating for herself but also her child. All that a woman consumes has an effect on the baby.A healthy diet would include lots of fruits and vegetables, milk products, carbohydrates and proteins. However, there are a couple of things that should be avoided during pregnancy either because they may cause discomfort or may harm the baby.
Foods to avoid
- Alcohol: Since alcohol has been associated with birth defects it is best that you give up alcohol during pregnancy. According to experts alcohol may lead to physical abnormalities, learning disabilities and emotional problems in children.
- Raw or Undercooked Meat: Any form of culinary preparation containing raw meat should be avoided. It could lead to listeria and salmonella poisoning. It could also be a cause of miscarriage.
Caffeine: Studies have shown that 300mg or more of caffeine in a day could lead to a miscarriage. Although it has not been proven that a moderate amount of caffeine could harm the baby it would still be safe to look for alternatives like decaf hot drinks or coconut water.
- Fish: Consuming fish containing high levels of mercury could lead to brain damage in the baby. It would be good to avoid fish such as sharks, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish during pregnancy and breast feeding. You could look for other variants like river fish which do not contain too much of mercury. In fact, consuming low-mercury variants of fish could lead an increased level of brain development in the child.
- Liver: Though the liver contains high level of iron it is also a very rich source of vitamin A. Too much of vitamin A is considered harmful for the baby.Unpasteurized milk and milk products: It is best to consume milk and milk products that have undergone pasteurization.
Soft cheese: The various varieties of soft cheese could be contaminated with listeria which could harm the baby and in some cases lead to a miscarriage. Some varieties of soft cheese are feta, brie, camembert, blue-veined cheese and Mexican style soft cheese such as asadero, queso blanco, queso fresco, queso de hoja, and queso de crema. Instead go for the harder variety such as cheddar cheese.
These nine months are the very precious days of a woman’s life. A few changes in diet during this period could guarantee a life long source of happiness and pride.
